The thing is, I love seasons. I love starting and finishing a thing. I love the natural close of a cycle and the beginning of a new one. But for most of the pandemic, the natural cycles in my business just didn't exist (please know I'm not complaining, I know I was super lucky considering how other businesses faired). After 2+ years of just being ON in work but OFF in most of the parts of my life that bring me joy and variety and excitement, I was just totally burnt out. It was like I was living in just one season that wouldn't ever change.
When it comes to creating content for your blog (or newsletter, YouTube channel, etc.) sometimes the hardest part is just figuring out what sort of content to share. It’s easy to get sucked into some fairly unhelpful thoughts as you’re trying to brainstorm:
What should I even say?
Doesn’t everyone know this stuff?
What can I tell them that hasn’t been said already?
Well, kind of. It wasn’t the Powerball or anything. I didn’t become a millionaire overnight. But I did get to spend money freely on exactly what wanted without it having to make sense. And it changed everything.
Here’s the story:
Let’s take a look at how visibility, content, and marketing work (in a real life example!).
This may sound counterintuitive, though it’s key if we’re building a business for the long haul.
Feeling stressed and overwhelmed? Do you feel increasingly tired throughout the day? Well, you’re not alone. Find out how to avoid burnout and how to develop healthier work habits.
If you’re used to doing things right the first time, getting the A+, impressing the teacher, and winning the awards, this is for you.
As you launch into business for the first time, or simply take things out of comfortable and into the next stage of growth, you need to know that chances are things won’t be smooth sailing. You’re going to have to get use to getting C’s and D’s, and definitely some F’s too.
I recently was preparing to be OOO (out of office!) for a week. I got to thinking about my prep this time v. my previous prep - and what I see many business owners do when trying to take time off. So I thought it'd be interesting to look at this together as taking time off is mission-critical for every business owner so they don't burn out.
I often notice that when business owners are really stuck on making a decision or they're really wrestling with something in their business, they are going based on assumptions…though haven’t actually stopped to do the math.
So what to do instead? Let’s talk about considering our options and doing the math - and how this can help bring clarity (and fun!) on our next step.
So I started thinking about past experiences I’ve had with various challenges—whether they be mindset, fitness, or food related—and decided to see what would happen if I tried creating my own.
I wondered, what if I just took the best parts of the various programs I’ve tried in the past and combined them into something that provides guidance and mindfulness, but without the stress?
A while back I purchased a $60 planner thinking it would be the solution to help me finally get organized. However, it felt like such a task just to fill it all out, so most days I didn't even open it. Eventually, I realized that the design put me into overload space.
Now, I keep my weekly task planning super simple. This is what I use and how I do it.
Is your business set up to be a filter…or a pump?
Many business owners make the mistake of not being specific up front about who they serve and what they offer…but then end up on consults and scheduling conversations that go nowhere, ending in frustration.
Let’s talk about how to attract the right people and redirect the wrong people, so everyone gets to what they want - faster.
